ACADEMICS

INTERDISCIPLINARY, PROJECT-BASED, PLAY-BASED, EXPERIENTIAL, REAL WORLD LEARNING

Our academic program at USA is an interdisciplinary approach. Most traditional public school classrooms teach from a "one size fits all" boxed curriculum where each subject stands alone. The philosophy at USA is that all subjects can and should be integrated as much as possible. Children absorb information and master skills best when there are natural connections in their learning. Children become immersed in their learning and truly engaged and excited when given the opportunity to learn this way. It also becomes very student-led as their questions help guide the conversation and direction of lessons. This gives students a sense of empowerment and freedom in their very own education while teaching them the very skills they will need to be successful.
Students at USA will be continually reminded that through their hard work and determination they can and will overcome challenges and obstacles. They will be taught that life's challenges and obstacles will help build and shape their character. Students at our school will all be asked to practice the Golden Rule of treating everyone the way you wish to be treated. Lessons will be taught about respect, empathy, assertiveness, responsibility, persistence, and building resilience as they occur naturally throughout the academic day.

We use "The Good and the Beautiful" homeschool curriculum to guide core concepts and skills. We use this curriculum for individual math and language arts lessons, and for whole-group lessons in science and history. We also use G&B for Handwriting. You can visit their website to learn more about this Christian-based homeschool program.

MATH & SCIENCE
The Good and the Beautiful will be used for individualized lessons. Math and science will be linked as much as possible as there are many natural connections between the two subjects. For example, we may measure something in nature and then that math skill leads to lessons on estimation, fractions, and finding differences. Real world math and basic financial literacy for elementary students will be taught. Students will learn basic math skills such as fluency, computation, problem solving, measurement and estimation through real world scenarios and a classroom economy system.
Our science lessons will be hands on and incorporate S.T.E.A.M. as much as possible. Some topics that we'll cover include nature/habitats, plants, weather, magnets, basic chemistry, and inventions.

History/Civics
Unfortunately, this is a subject that is being lost in our public schools today. We believe it is more important now than ever. Our curriculum at USA will teach students patriotism, US government, American history that highlights the many amazing historical figures who have helped shape our nation and can be looked upon as true role models for every American citizen, community helpers and their interconnected roles with one another, as well as current events, cultures and traditions, geography, and mapping skills.

The Good and the Beautiful history course will start with Adam and Eve and take students through history in sequential order while stopping to pause and focus on certain periods in history a little longer depending on which course students are in.
LANGUAGE ARTS
The Good and the Beautiful will be used for individualized lessons. Students will read both independently and in small groups. They will read a variety of fiction and nonfiction books often connected to the theme or lesson being taught. We will also utilize magazines, newspapers, and online resources. We will have teacher led read aloud time to model and practice comprehension and fluency skills.
Students will be taught grammar skills during reading and writing. They will be taught how to write personal and creative narratives, informational pieces, as well as opinion, persuasive, reviews, letters, and poetry pieces.
